例えばいわゆる米国式のパーティーは、誰かが主催したり個人の家でやる場合もありますが、赤の他人が何十人も集まったりするんです。こういうのは、日本ではあまりありません。日本だったら、他人が何十人も一カ所に集まったら、大抵は自分の知人と話すなど、内輪で盛り上がりがちですが、米国のパーティーは、新しい人と出会うためのものなので、みんな積極的に明るく、社交的に振る舞います。

　米国では、こうした場でウイットを利かせた会話ができる人が人気がある。それは、異性にモテるかどうかという以前の問題で、日常的な社交生活で、そういうことができないと（人間関係は）難しい。もともと米国にはそういう社交スタイルがあるので、インターネットという新しい媒体を使った出会いにも、それほど抵抗がないのかもしれません。
